LENS 2 assignment The purpose of my response is to respond to the book because this book has a lot of similarities that I see in myself. Some of the events that happened in the book remind me of high school. My audience is targeted to other college students or younger kids that want insight on how this book relates to them. By saying some of the similarities others could relate to the book as well as my own experiences. There are several instances throughout the book that I can relate to me in high school. I had my first real relationship in the tenth grade and this is what year the book started out in. Reading the book it seemed like this was Leo’s first girlfriend as well. Some parts of Leo and stargirl’s relationship reminded me of my own. How they were in love and it started out good but the ending was bad. In the beginning of my relationship was amazing I didn’t care what others thought about us as long as we had each other. When Leo let the other students influence him on what he should think of her also reminded me of how I let others get into my head and have false intentions of her. Also we were in love and the ending was similar to the book in the aspect stargirl disappeared. The girl I was dating seemed to disappear and in the end of the book he got that necklace and he knew that she would always be a part of him. I get that feeling too. Even though were still not together she still is much a part of me because she taught me a lot just like stargirl did to Leo. Another part of the book that seemed to be similar with experiences I had would be when Stargirl cared about everyone and tried to make as many people as possible happy. I do not go to the measures that she does to literally try to make everyone happy but if I know something is wrong with someone even if I hardly know the person id take my time to help. She also is very observant person as well. I notice stupid little things about people that normally wouldn’t be noticed. I remember information about others that people couldn’t really say about me in return. I like to notice my surroundings just like stargirl did in the book. Some of the flaws that stargirl has I have too. Sometimes being too nice can make people question you. One occasion in high school I was trying to be nice to two of my friends fighting. Being too concerned with the problem my two friends had I lost sense of reality. I tried to solve the problem but I got injured instead of my other two friends. Stargirl got hurt when she just tried to do nice things for people like going to a funeral of a girl she barely knew and cheering for the other team. Just like stargirl my intentions are in the right place but sometimes they are viewed in the wrong way to people. This is a story that children can identify to an extent because a lot of the situations children would not be able to relate to. Since this book was about high school kids to me younger kids would not be able to relate to the book. For example the feeling of love for another person is usually not focused on until later in life. However the younger child could relate to that one person they have a “crush on” to be similar to Stargirl and Leo. Some of the other events that happened like the dance, stargirls attitude on life, and some of the sayings the Professor had could make no sense to a younger child. But this to me is a good thing. They can question stargirl and realize that people are who they are. It’s important that not everyone is the same in this world and even though we don’t really see where they are coming from we got to except the differences in them. Kids also can relate to how it is not good to bring other down when they are trying to be nice. If someone is nice to you then it should be returned back. That is a important thing for kids to know. To me the overall picture younger kids would have trouble relating because they are not in high school experiencing the same thing but the small details and issues could be focused on and be relatable to the kids. What the book has an effect on the reader is to remember similar situations they had in the past. It teaches the reader that it’s not good to judge someone just because they act a little different from the other students. Also it’s important to be observant. Stargirl took it to an extreme case like the others girl’s family funeral. But when others feel noticed by someone they feel special about themselves. Leo teaches the reader about having to choose one person over the other. It is something that a lot of kids deal with and is important to think before you act. The reader also gets the sense of not having cloture which is important to learn. Everything in life will not be always resolved or fixed completely or the way we want. However everything happens for a reason which is a big aspect about this book. This book has many similarities with high school and how the overall picture works which is good for younger kids. They can experience through the book aspects of life they never really thought about before.
